Uba Sani Launches Sanitation Initiative, Creates 5,000 Jobs in Kaduna

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has launched a new environmental sanitation initiative that will provide employment for 5,000 youths and women across the state.
Speaking on Thursday at the launch of the programme, known as Operation TSAFTA, the governor announced that an additional 7,000 jobs would be created in the coming months as the initiative expands.
Governor Sani said the state government has procured essential sanitation equipment, including Roro bins, dustbins, water tankers, and personal protective equipment, to ensure the effective and safe implementation of the programme.
According to him, the equipment is aimed at improving operational efficiency, enhancing worker safety, and ensuring that sanitation activities are carried out in a professional and sustainable manner.
He explained that the first phase of Operation TSAFTA would focus on four local government areas currently facing significant environmental challenges due to rapid urbanisation, increased commercial activities, and high population density. Lessons learned from this phase, he added, would guide the programme’s expansion to other parts of the state.
Describing the initiative as a practical response to environmental pressures linked to population growth and urban expansion, the governor said it reflects his administration’s commitment to tackling such challenges with coordination and purpose.
“A clean and well-managed environment is fundamental to human health, economic productivity, and social stability. Operation TSAFTA is not a standalone intervention, but part of a broader effort to embed environmental responsibility into governance and daily life across Kaduna State,” he said.
Governor Sani commended the 23 local government councils, as well as the Ministries of Local Government Affairs and Environment and Natural Resources, for their collaboration, stressing that effective governance depends on cooperation among institutions.
He noted that the programme creates meaningful employment opportunities for women and young people while contributing directly to environmental cleanliness and public wellbeing.
By linking environmental management with livelihoods, he said, the initiative promotes a sense of ownership, encourages responsible behaviour, and reinforces the idea that environmental protection is a shared civic duty.
The governor added that Operation TSAFTA aligns with his administration’s broader commitment to youth inclusion, skills development, and participatory governance.
He further disclosed that the programme prioritises private sector involvement through the engagement of professional cleaning firms to improve efficiency, accountability, and service delivery.
According to him, the impact of the state’s environmental reforms is already visible, noting that Kaduna has recently gained recognition as one of the environmentally conscious states in the country.
“This progress reflects the outcomes of clear policies, institutional reforms, and the cooperation of citizens who understand the value of a clean and orderly environment,” he added.
